How to introduce a pacifier to your brand-new bundle of joy: Tips from a NICU Therapist
So many of our parents ask: “Should my baby use a pacifier?” For preterm infants, the answer is YES.
Babies born early need to work on strengthening their oral motor skills and practicing that sucking skill to prepare to go to breast or bottle when he/she is ready. But for term infants, the answer will be “it is entirely up to you and YOUR baby.” When it comes to term-age babies, there is no right or wrong answer here when it comes to pacifiers. Some babies love them, others could care less. If you choose to introduce a pacifier to your baby, it is best to offer it within the first few weeks after they are born. Advantages to using a pacifier:-
Decreases the risk of SIDS (# 1 reason in my opinion)
- Helps calm/soothe baby, promotes relaxation
- It is a MUST for preterm babies in order to work on suck-swallow-breathing skills
- Again, it is most successful when you offer it within the first few weeks of life
- Offer when your baby is swaddled and calm, not angry, hungry or tired
- Do not offer if your baby is hungry in lieu of a feeding. If your baby is hungry, it is best to just feed
- Try different brands until you find the right one for your baby
